Pay Attention–at Least Until You’re 15

I found this quote the other day by Willa Cather: “Most of the basic material a writer works with is acquired before the age of fifteen.”

It made me want to run to my journals (yes I still have them) and read through them again, see what I was accumulating back then for my writing life now. I was curious about what books I’d read, films I saw . . . everything that might’ve influenced me up until that point.

It also made me wonder if this mightn’t be part of the reason why I like writing YA so much, why a 15 year-old (or 16 year-old) voice is the one that keeps occurring to me each time it’s time to write a new book.

Not having solid answers today, I leave you with this picture of me at 15, instead.
