Summer of . . . Kissing.

May 18th, 2011 by Terra | 2 Comments | Filed in Summer of Firsts and Lasts

People think about a lot of different things when summer rolls around: suntans, beach umbrellas, parades, ice cream cones, blockbuster movies, piles of books to read, lemonade stands, naps on the hammock, etc. etc. etc.

I, of course, think about kissing.

But maybe I’m ALWAYS thinking about kissing, seeing as it is one of my favorite activities between two people who are so inclined to do so together. (Even a peck on the cheek from a friend is nice.) For some reason summer makes me think EXTRA about kissing, though. You can see why in my guest blog post at  The Contemps this week. (Or you can read all three of my novels, which all involve kissing in some way–even bad kissing.)

In the meantime, here is a shot of my yearbook pictures, before (8th grade) and then after (9th grade) getting Kissed For Real. (Notice the sudden need for HUGE GLASSES — all the better to see you with as you’re coming at me, m’dear.)

Songs In My Head Upon Waking in the Last Week (many are good for kissing):

“Close to You,” by the Carpenters; “Three Marlenas,” by the Wallflowers; “Feeling Good,” by Nina Simone; “Calendar Girl,” by Stars; “I Only Have Eyes For You,” by the Flamingos; “Don’t Stop Believin’,” by Journey; “All Right Now,” by Free

Camp Extravaganza = Success

May 11th, 2011 by Terra | No Comments | Filed in Summer of Firsts and Lasts

To celebrate the release last week of The Summer of Firsts and Lasts, my friends at Little Shop of Stories threw a truly awesome Camp Extravaganza party for me. We had ice cream (all three flavors on the book cover, or course), camp crafts & games, plus a fantastic talent show that included some of the members of the girls book group I lead, the local improv troupe, D.U.C.K Improv, plus my friend Vincenzo Tortorici and my own husband’s fabulous magic trick! (I read as part of the talent show too.)

Here’s how some of it looked:

It was terribly fun and fabulous (especially having made Camp Callanwolde t-shirts beforehand). All in all, a terrific weekend!

And then! I got the news that Amazon has included The Summer of Firsts and Lasts in its Summer 2011 Reading List! If you’re looking for something good to read, check it out, because there’s a ton of great stuff on here!

Songs in my Head Upon Waking in the Last Week:

“Nightswimming,” by REM; “Nightswimming,” by REM*; “This Tornado Loves You,” by Neko Case; “Mykonos,” by Fleet Foxes; “Foreground,” by Grizzly Bear,” “You Don’t Love Me,” by Matthew Sweet; and “Goodnight Lovers,” by Depeche Mode

* Yes you got that right–two mornings in a row with the same song. But it was the release week of SoFaL, and this song is on the soundtrack I made for the book!

This week marked the release of my third novel, The Summer of Firsts and Lasts. This is a special book to me, in that it is about sisterhood, and first love, and summer camp: three things that are GREAT.

The cover is also, as you may have noticed, delicious.

So in preparation for the release, I embarked on 30 Days of Ice Cream, starting April 3rd. (Well, really it was the 2nd, but I was confused about the release date.)

The flavors I imbibed in were:

1. Cookie Dough
2. Lemon Sorbet
3. Mint chocolate chip (white not green)
4. Ben & Jerry’s Coffee Heath Bar Crunch
5. Rocky Road AND Heavenly Hash!
6. Pineapple sherbet
7. Pistachio
8. Moosetracks
9. Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia
10. Fudge Ripple (mooshed into “soup”)
11. Margarita sorbet
12. Peanut Butter Cup
13. Chocolate Mocha Chip
14. Ben & Jerry’s Birthday Cake (notice a theme?)
15. Maple Ginger Snap Gelato
16. Ben & Jerry’s Chubby Hubby
17. Chocolate Malteds
18. Lavender Honey ice cream from Cafe Alsace
19. Lime sherbet w/ tequila poured over the top (21+ of course)
20. Breyer’s vanilla bean w/ jellybeans
21. Homemade grape & rosemary sorbet
22. DQ Blizzard  (Butterfinger for me.)
23. Salted caramel from Morelli’s
24. Baskin Robbin’s Bubble Gum
25. Homemade strawberry
26. Cookies n’ Cream
27. Vanilla ice cream sundaes (w/ the works, duh!!)
28. Neopolitan
29. Hagen Daaz Coffee (w/ chocolate sauce)
30. Watermelon sorbet

There are of course a lot of flavors I skipped. Though I am a bit ice cream-ed out right now, I would love to hear your favorites.

Also there is this awesome giveaway that is going on right now that you should check out.

We will be partying at Little Shop of Stories on Friday May 6th at 7 PM. There will be a talent show, and ice cream (of course), and arts & crafts and even some camp games. I hope I will see you there.

But mainly, I hope you enjoy this new book!
