Monday night, a band called Grownup Avenger Stuff played at the Music Room here in Atlanta. I’d gone there to watch another band play, myself, but stuck around to see what this one was all about, and I’m so glad I did. Though I’m not positive I’ll be able to listen to them ALL the time (quite loud and a lot of screaming), their show was completely awesome.
Here’s how they describe themselves: Quirky, Fun, and Super Powers! An almost completely (surprisingly?) family rock quartet from Charlotte, NC: Grown Up Avenger Stuff, formed in 2009, dedicates themselves to saving the world one rock song at a time! A live show offers a range from slow poignant rock to heavy driving anthems and it’s not unusual for fans to end a set dancing, jumping, screaming, and sweaty – pretty much just like the band.
And here’s what BEING FRIENDS WITH BOYS’ Sad Jackal members had to say about them:
Eli: [Holding both hands above eyes, as though making visors. Eyebrows up as far as they can go. Eyes wide, staring at a fixed place somewhere in deep space. Head shakes once or twice, occasionally.] Sick, man. That whole thing was just effing . . . concrete . . . total . . . I mean, whoa.
Fabian: They sound like they must all have a really great time together. It’s not completely my thing, but you can really feel the connection between everyone up there. Great bond, good show.
Abe: Don’t ask me, man. Chick looked like she worked some bad temp job, and then—BAM!!!
Charlotte: I just don’t know how she did that. The songs went all over the place but they never felt chaotic or messy. All very intentional and great. The drums, the guitar, it was all so fast and yet smooth at the same time. I worry about her voice though, if they do a lot of shows. She must have some kind of magic lemon garlic tea potion that she drinks to keep her sounding good.
Oliver: [laughs] Yeah just don’t go getting any ideas Spider, okay? We don’t want to change our sound that much.
Charlotte: [laughs back] Oh God don’t worry–I could never do anything that!
